The Minelab X-Terra Pro and the Vanquish range sit close together in price, and they’re both aimed at people starting out or stepping up. But they work in different ways. The X-Terra Pro is a fully waterproof single-frequency detector where you choose the frequency. Every Vanquish is multi-frequency and sets itself up.

The key difference
The X-Terra Pro uses Minelab’s Pro-Switch design, which lets you switch between two single operating frequencies. It has Park, Field and Beach modes, and it’s fully waterproof. Single frequency is well proven, and choosing the frequency gives you some control over what the detector favours. But single-frequency detectors are more affected by wet salt sand and mineralised ground.
Every Vanquish uses Multi-IQ, running several frequencies at once and adjusting itself automatically. That gives more stable performance on UK wet sand and clay, with less to learn.

Minelab Vanquish 340 (about £199)
The most recommended beginner detector in the UK: Multi-IQ, automatic setup, Park, Field and Beach modes, and about 1.2kg. The coil is waterproof, but the control box is only water-resistant. Rated 4.3 stars from 704 reviews.
Minelab Vanquish 360 (about £259)
Multi-IQ plus full IP68 waterproofing to 16ft, with a 10-inch V10X coil. It combines the Vanquish's stability with the X-Terra Pro's waterproofing, for less money.
Minelab Vanquish 460 (about £349)

Our verdict
For most UK detectorists, a Vanquish is the better buy. Multi-frequency copes better with British ground, and the 360 and 460 now match the X-Terra Pro’s waterproofing. Choose the X-Terra Pro if you specifically want a single-frequency detector to learn manual settings on, or you already know you like that style of machine.

Is the X-Terra Pro multi-frequency? No. It lets you choose between single frequencies, but it doesn’t run them simultaneously like the Vanquish’s Multi-IQ.
